Implant treatment at Whitefield Dental starts with a 3D CBCT scan of the jaw.
For most people, the whole dental implant process takes between three and nine months from first consultation to final crown. Most of that time is spent letting the implant fuse with your jawbone. Here's how dental implant treatment at Whitefield Dental breaks down, stage by stage.
If you've been searching for dental implants near me and wondering how much time to set aside, the honest answer depends mostly on your jawbone and whether a tooth still needs to come out. Two people having the same treatment can end up with quite different timelines.
The stages at a glance
Consultation and CBCT scan: one or two appointments
Tooth extraction, if needed: followed by a few months of healing
Bone grafting, if needed: often several extra months
Implant placement: usually a single appointment
Healing: typically three to six months
Abutment and crown: a few weeks, over one or two visits
Not everyone needs every stage. Your CBCT scan and consultation tell us which apply to you.
Stage 1: consultation and 3D planning
Treatment starts with a full check of your teeth, gums and bite. We take a CBCT scan, a 3D X-ray of the jaw that shows how much bone there is and where the nerves and sinuses sit. This is where we agree whether a single implant, an implant-supported bridge or implant-retained dentures suit you best.
Our implant team includes Dr Wasif Jamil, our implantologist, and Dr Annam Salim, a cosmetic and implant dentist. Good planning at this stage is what makes the later steps predictable.
Stage 2: extraction and bone grafting
If the tooth being replaced is still there, it needs to come out first. The socket is usually left to heal for a while before the implant goes in, although this depends on the case.
Where the jawbone has shrunk, often because a tooth has been missing for some time, a bone graft may be needed to give the implant a solid base. It adds several months, but it can make the difference between an implant being possible and not.
Stage 3: placing the implant
The implant is placed in a short procedure under local anaesthetic, usually in one appointment for a single implant. Some swelling or tenderness afterwards is normal, and most people are back to their usual routine within a few days. If you're nervous, we also offer IV sedation.
We'll talk through temporary options with you, so you're not left with an obvious gap while you heal.
Stage 4: the healing period
This is the longest stage and the one we won't rush. Over roughly three to six months, the implant fuses with the bone around it, a process called osseointegration. Putting the final crown on before that bond is strong raises the risk of the implant failing, so we only move on once it's stable.
Aftercare matters during this stage too. Our guide to the biggest mistake people make after implant surgery is worth reading before your appointment.
Once healing is complete, implants can support a single crown or, as here, a bridge.
Stage 5: the abutment and crown
When healing is complete, a small connector called an abutment is fitted to the implant. We then take digital scans so your crown can be made to match the shape and shade of your own teeth. Fitting it usually takes one or two more visits.
What can make the process longer
Needing a tooth taken out first
Low bone levels that need a graft
Gum disease or infection that has to be treated first
Smoking, which slows healing
Replacing several teeth at once
Searching for dental implants near me? What to look for
A good implant practice won't promise a fixed timeline before it has assessed you. Look for in-house 3D imaging, a written treatment plan and a team that explains each step honestly, including extras like grafting. For a wider overview of the options, see our guide to dental implants in Whitefield.
Implants mean several appointments over a few months. We're on Radcliffe New Road in Whitefield, so patients from Prestwich and the rest of north Manchester don't have far to travel for each one.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the whole dental implant process take?
For many patients, between three and nine months. It can take longer if a tooth needs removing or a bone graft is needed first.
Why does the healing stage take so long?
The implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone. That bond, called osseointegration, is what makes it strong enough to take a crown.
Will I have a gap while my implant heals?
Not necessarily. We'll discuss temporary options with you so your smile looks natural while you heal.
Does bone grafting always add time?
When it's needed, it usually adds several months. Not everyone needs it, and your CBCT scan will show whether you do.
