Feeling confident enough to smile properly for the camera is what most patients want.
If you don't like your smile in photos, start by working out whether it's the camera or your teeth. Phone cameras exaggerate some things, such as tooth shade under warm light, but they also pick up real issues you stop noticing in the mirror. A cosmetic dentistry consultation can sort one from the other.
As a cosmetic dentist in Manchester, we see plenty of patients who first booked because of a wedding album or a group photo from a night out. Many of them need far less treatment than they expected. Some need none at all.
Why your smile looks different on camera
The front camera flips you
Many phones show a mirrored preview on the front camera, then save the photo the other way round. You're used to your mirror image, so a slightly uneven tooth or a smile that lifts more on one side can look wrong in the saved photo, even though nothing about your teeth has changed.
Close-up lenses distort
Front cameras use a wide lens. Held at arm's length, they make whatever is nearest the lens look bigger, and that's often your nose and front teeth. A photo taken from a few steps away with the rear camera zoomed in looks much more like you do in person.
Lighting changes tooth shade
Warm indoor lighting makes teeth look more yellow, and some editing filters make them look grey against brightened skin. Before deciding the colour is the problem, look at your teeth in daylight by a window.
Posed smiles show more gum
A big posed smile often lifts the top lip higher than your natural smile does, so more gum shows. The dark spaces at the corners of a wide smile also stand out more on camera than they do face to face.
Bring your photos to your consultation
Pick three or four photos you don't like and bring them along. We'll compare them with photos and digital scans we take in surgery, so we can see what the camera is exaggerating and what's really there. It's one of the quickest ways to get to the point, because you can show us exactly what bothers you.
What a cosmetic dentist in Manchester can change
Once we know what's real, the fix is usually specific and often small:
Teeth that look dull or yellow in daylight: professional teeth whitening. Existing fillings, crowns and veneers won't whiten, so we check for those first.
Short, chipped or uneven edges: composite edge bonding, usually in a single visit with little or no drilling.
Crowding that catches the light: Invisalign or Smile White clear aligners.
More gum than you'd like: gum contouring, which we carry out with a laser.
Older crowns or veneers that no longer match: replacements or porcelain veneers, matched to your current shade.

Seeing the result before treatment starts
Much of the worry about cosmetic work is not knowing how it will look. Dr Mohammad Jaberansari, our Clinical Director and lead cosmetic dentist, plans changes with Digital Smile Design alongside Dr Raihan Qadir and Dr Annam Salim. You'll see a preview of the planned smile on your own face before anything is done, which makes it much easier to judge how it will come across in photos.

When we'd suggest doing nothing
If your teeth look fine in daylight and in photos taken from a normal distance, the answer might be the camera rather than your teeth. We'd rather tell you that than sell you treatment you don't need. Natural-looking results come from doing the right amount, not the most.
Our practice is on Radcliffe New Road in Whitefield, and we see cosmetic patients from across Manchester, many of whom fit their consultation into a Tuesday evening or a Saturday morning.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my teeth look more yellow in photos than in the mirror?
Warm lighting, flash and filters can exaggerate tooth shade. If the colour still bothers you in daylight, professional whitening may help.
Why does my smile look crooked in selfies?
Many front cameras save a flipped version of the preview you see, so you're looking at the reverse of your usual mirror image. A wide lens held close also distorts.
Can cosmetic dentistry improve my smile in photos without looking fake?
Yes. Treatments are planned around your face, so the aim is a healthier-looking version of your own smile rather than a new one.
Can I see what my smile will look like before treatment?
In many cases, yes. Digital Smile Design lets us show you a preview of the planned changes before treatment begins.
