Full mouth disinfection is a treatment for Chronic Periodontitis (gum disease) in adults. Periodontitis is a later stage of Gingivitis (gum disease) and is an irreversible process where resistant bacteria in the mouth cause gum disease affecting the gums and bone which support our teeth. Progression of periodontal disease can lead to gum recession, bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

GUM DISINFECTION

The aim of full mouth disinfection is to aggressively and effectively remove the bacteria harbouring in and around the root surfaces of your teeth underneath the gums - which contribute to the progression of unstable periodontal disease. At Whitefield Dental, this is done through integrated care from our dentists and dental hygienists.

GUM DISINFECTION INVOLVES:

PHASE 1 - ASSESSMENT AND PREVENTION

  • The hygienist will perform a detailed periodontal chart of your teeth to assess the severity of the periodontal disease and provide you with detailed oral hygiene instructions to help you optimise your toothbrushing at home and maintain your gum health.

  • The dentist will prescribe two types of antibiotics which you will need to take for a couple of days before your treatment.

PHASE 2 - TREATMENT

  • This will involve two appointments so the Hygienist can focus on one half of the mouth during each visit.

  • Treatment will be done under local anaesthetic to ensure pain-free procedure.

  • Scaling and root planing of the teeth to remove any plaque and tartar in and around the teeth and on the root surface underneath the gums.

  • Polish your teeth to remove any superficial stains.

PHASE 3 - MAINTENANCE

  • Review at 2 months for another detailed periodontal chart of your teeth to assess the health of your gums and oral hygiene - note any improvements and changes and discuss how your oral hygiene management is going.

  • Further deep clean of your teeth and gums to remove any plaque or tartar build-up.

  • Helps maintain good oral health and gum health leaving teeth teeth smooth and tartar-free.

  • Helps stabilise periodontal disease - reducing further gum recession, bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

  • Aids in longevity of restorations and dental implants.

  • Cost-effective - reduces future complications and need for treatment if dental issues progress.

  • Promotes a brighter and healthier smile.
