Veneers in Whitefield or Composite Bonding? An Honest Comparison

Smiling woman in a dental chair talking to her dentist about veneers

Choosing between veneers and bonding starts with an honest conversation about what you want to change.

If you want to change the shape and colour of several teeth and have it last, porcelain veneers are usually the better choice. If you want to fix a chip, close a small gap or tidy uneven edges, composite bonding often does the job for less. We offer both, so we've no reason to push you towards one.

Here's how veneers in Whitefield compare with bonding on the things patients ask us about most.

How long do veneers last compared with bonding?

Our veneers typically last 10 to 15 years or more with proper care, and our bonding page gives 5 to 7 years. So bonding costs less upfront, but over 15 years you may pay for it more than once. If you're in your forties and replacing old crowns or veneers, porcelain usually works out as the better long-term buy.

What shortens either one? Grinding your teeth at night is the big one, along with biting on hard things. If you grind, we may recommend a night guard to protect your new teeth.

Do veneers damage your teeth?

Our contact lens porcelain veneers are 0.3 to 0.5mm thick, so many people need little or no tooth removed. Where some preparation is needed, it's a small amount of enamel, and we do it under local anaesthetic. The Oral Health Foundation notes that some enamel is often removed so the veneer doesn't feel bulky. That's why we plan carefully before we touch a tooth.

Bonding is usually additive. Composite goes on top of the tooth with little or no drilling, which is one reason people like it for a first cosmetic change.

Who suits veneers in Whitefield, and who suits bonding?

Veneers tend to suit you if

  • You want to change the shape and colour of several teeth together

  • Your teeth are heavily stained in a way whitening won't shift

  • You have old veneers or crowns that need replacing

Bonding tends to suit you if

  • You have one or two chipped or worn edges

  • You want to close a small gap

  • You'd like a reversible change before deciding on anything bigger

If your teeth are crooked, neither may be the right first step. Straightening with aligners can mean you need fewer veneers, or less bonding, at the end. We'd rather tell you that than cover up crowding with porcelain.

What does getting veneers involve?

It starts with a consultation, where we look at your teeth, your bite and what you'd like to change. We then plan your smile with a digital workflow and Digital Smile Design, so you can see the result before any treatment starts. Your veneers are handcrafted by dental technicians to that plan, then fitted and checked for bite and comfort.

Dr Mohammad Jaberansari, our Clinical Director and Lead Cosmetic and Restorative Dentist, leads our cosmetic work.

Are veneers worth the extra cost?

Often, over the long run. Take our own starting prices. Bonding from £394 a tooth, lasting 5 to 7 years, may be placed three times in 15 years. As a rough estimate, that's around £1,200 a tooth in total. A porcelain veneer from £720 a tooth, lasting 10 to 15 years or more, may not need replacing at all in that time. Your figures will differ, but it's worth doing the sum before choosing on upfront price alone.

Bonding still wins for small changes. Nobody needs porcelain to fix one chipped corner.
